Differences between 3D scanners

In today's digital age, 3D scanners play an important role in many fields, but there are many differences between different types of 3D scanners.

From the scanning principle, it is mainly divided into contact and non-contact. Contact 3D scanners obtain data by direct contact between the probe and the surface of the object. This method can obtain very accurate three-dimensional information, especially for objects with extremely high precision requirements and hard surfaces, such as reverse engineering of industrial parts. But it also has limitations, and may cause damage to soft or fragile objects during contact.

Non-contact 3D scanners can be further divided into optical and non-optical types. Optical 3D scanners use the principle of light reflection, and common ones are structured light scanners and laser scanners. Structured light scanners project specific light patterns onto the surface of an object, calculate the shape of the object based on the deformation of the light pattern, have a fast scanning speed and high accuracy, and are suitable for scanning objects with complex shapes and high precision requirements. Laser scanners determine the position of points on the surface of an object by emitting a laser beam and measuring the time or phase difference of its reflected light, and have a good performance in scanning large objects.

Non-optical non-contact 3D scanners, such as ultrasonic scanners, obtain object information by emitting ultrasonic waves and analyzing the characteristics of their reflected waves. They are often used in the medical field to scan certain special materials.

In terms of accuracy, industrial-grade 3D scanners can usually achieve extremely high accuracy, at the micron or even nanometer level, while consumer-grade 3D scanners have a slightly lower relative accuracy. In terms of scanning speed, different scanners also vary greatly. Some can quickly obtain large-area three-dimensional data in a short time, while others may take a long time to complete a detailed scan.

Understanding the differences between these 3D scanners will help users choose the most suitable 3D scanner based on their own needs, such as accuracy requirements, scanning objects, budget, etc., and better play its application value in different fields.
